Description

Built in tiers below the citadel, Mystras has Byzantine monasteries and churches, palaces and houses lying in ruin on the steep slope of a foothill of the Taygetus. Nowadays it seems muted but has lost none of its grandeur, and its ruins, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, testify to the splendour of the "Wonder of the Morea". Mystras may seem to be asleep, but wild orchids open up in spring among the stones. A symbol!
