Useful information

Description

A short distance from Beaufort, Penn Center National Historic Landmark District is easy to get to and well worth the detour. Its 19 buildings were once part of a school established in 1862 by Philadelphia Quakers, Laura Towne and Ellen Murray, to educate Sea Island slaves freed at the beginning of the Civil War, before their emancipation. The site is now a conference center.
