This island owes its name to the vast warehouses, where wood was stacked vertically in the Dutch fashion, that was formerly linked to the Admiralty by a canal on which wood was transported to the neighbouring shipyards. It is entered through a majestic archway (1780). This military zone, the object of a major architectural project, has been open to the public since 2016. Visitors inevitably appreciate the laid-back and relaxed atmosphere and the beauty of the warehouses, undergoing refurbishment.
