Description

Built in 1627 and extended in 1651, this Shinto shrine, which was founded to house the relics of the shogun, has miraculously escaped the disasters which have hit Tokyo. Stop to admire the magnificent Chinese-style door. The two dragons which flank it are said to be the work of the great left-handed sculptor Hidari Jingoro (1594-1634). The doors and pillars are entirely covered in gold leaf. Inside there is a fine sculpted ceiling and painted walls, which are the work of Kano Tanyu (1602-1674), the Kano school's most illustrious painter.
