Useful information

Description

The Bridge of Sighs, an arched bridge built in stone from Istria between 1602 and 1614, bears the coat of arms of the doge Marino Grimani and links the Doge's Palace to the New Prisons. This is one of Venice's best-known sights, visible from small bridges nearby which are constantly packed with crowds of tourists. The "sighs" are said to be those made by the condemned as they caught sight of the lagoon for the last time, symbol of their lost freedom.
