Punic Tophet
The Green Guide

Useful information

Description

Comprising an enclosure of steles surrounded by wild grasses, this is an extremely old Punic site of worship where barbaric rites are thought to have been carried out. It is not known what name the Carthaginians would have given to the site. The word "tophet" comes from the Old Testament and refers to the Ben Hinnon sanctuary where children were sacrificed. This tophet was dedicated to Baal Hammon and Tanit, the divinities who were thought to protect the city; the votive steles bear the symbols of these two gods: a covered solar disk and an inverted crescent moon.
