Useful information

Description

The great cathedral, a fine example of the Muscovite Baroque style, is hidden in a leafy setting behind a wide brick wall studded with towers. This is the only sanctuary open to the public at Donskoy Monastery, founded in 1592 at the very spot where Boris Godunov defeated the Tatars. The interior, boasting a magnificent iconostasis, is dazzling. Alexandre Solzhenitsyn, winner of the Nobel Prize for literature, is buried in the cemetery.
