Commissioned by Empress Elizabeth Petrovna as a tribute to the Izmailov imperial regiment, one of the oldest of the Russian army, this cathedral with five blue domes can seat up to 3 000; it was built by Vassily Stassov from 1828 to 1835. It was the scene of Dostoevsky's wedding and Anton Rubinstein's funeral.
